A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
