Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
